S’NO PLACE LIKE STORYTIME

PS Are you stuck inside on a wintry day? Try this project to bring joy to your backyard birds:

Use a cookie cutter (a snowman would be nice!) to cut a shape out of a slice of bread. Poke a hole in the top with a pencil. Brush an egg white onto the bread and press birdseed on top. Let it dry. Thread a piece of ribbon or yarn through the hole, and place on a branch or bush where birds can perch. Check out a book about birds so you can identify your hungry visitors!

When you are stuck inside, there is no REASON not to RESEARCH what it takes to become a REPORTER. You can REFLECT on the people, places, and things in your own family, or REACH out to your neighborhood. RECORD your child’s story, and illustrate with REAL pictures from a magazine or your own drawings. Include REMARKS about your RELATIVES, and perhaps some RECIPES. As a parent or caregiver, are you in a QUANDARY as to how to manage storytime? That is a good QUESTION! In the QUEST for a QUALITY experience, we should not QUIVER as we set expectations, even for our patrons who are QUITE young. Though a child might be QUARRELSOME when expected to be QUIET, if you are QUICK to act, you can QUELL undesirable behavior without QUASHING the desire for learning and social interaction!

Don’t QUIT – though a process seemingly fraught with QUAGMIRES of QUICKSAND, leading a child to join the ranks of responsible readers makes you a QUEEN (or perhaps a QUARTERBACK).

LITERACY LINK: P is for PRODUCE (the fruit and vegetable kind!)

The next few weeks PRESENT a PERFECT time to PLANT. PICK a PATIO POT, or PLOW a PLOT in the lower forty…. While PANSIES are on their way out, PETUNIAS, PUMPKINS, POTATOES, and PEAS will soon begin PEEKING through the dirt.

There are lots of literacy POSSIBILITIES: talk about the PROCESS; write about your garden on a POSTER; take PICTURES for a scrapbook; send invitations for a PICNIC in the PARK with the PLENTY you’ve harvested (even if it’s only a tomato PIE – otherwise known as a PIZZA!)

LITERACY LINK: O is for OPINION

How do you select a book with/for your child? You can test a number of OPTIONS, and see what the ODDS of success might be. OMIT any more than 2 OR 3 choices at a time, and use ONE OF these criteria:

Cover – “Which ONE (color, picture) do you like best?”

Subject – “Dogs or cats today?”

Author – “Last week we checked out an Eric Carle book; would you like another book by him or something by a different author?”

Length – “Would you like 2 short books, or 1 longer one?”

OFTEN, the choosing is most fun of all!

LITERACY LINK – NAME stickers

Why do we start each storytime session by distributing NAME stickers? Well, most of all it’s fun, and the sticker serves as a souvenir and conversation cue for later “discussion” with your preschooler or toddler. But more importantly, the practice begins to make the connection between the spoken, heard, and written word, using a significant part of your child’s environment: his or her NAME. The interlude with Ms. Laurie also builds confidence and social skills, and provides structure for the storytime experience. So what NAME games can you come up with?

LITERACY LINK: F is for FREEDOM

Allowing a child to have some choices is always a good thing. The same is true for using the library! As a FAMILY , decide how many and what kind of books are appropriate for your child. Then allow him to choose, using a variety of FACTORS to guide his choices: the title, a FAMILIAR character, the picture on the front, a subject he likes.

At home, set aside FORMAL times to read, as well as FREE time where reading (or looking at picture books or FINGERING a board book ) can be promoted as a worthwhile choice.

Select a bag, box, or basket (Designing or decorating one with your child can be FULFILLING…) where your child can be responsible for the care of the books. Then, return FREQUENTLY to cultivate your child’s literary liberty!

Many pre-literacy skills are developed in surprising ways. To ENHANCE focus and concentration, for EXAMPLE, ENCOURAGE your child to ENGAGE in some weight-bearing EXERCISE. Try this activity to liven up reading time - Select a book which has several characters that appear throughout the story. Make simple craft stick puppets representing each character. As you read, have your child display the appropriate character; older children may want to continue the story or make up a new one for the puppets.

LITERACY LINK: A is for APPLE

See how many different –colored apples you can find at the grocery store.
Take an apple, cut it across the “equator” (not pole to pole). What do you see? Sing “Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star”!
Make applesauce; grown-ups boil the cut-up apples (skins too), and children mash them with butter and cinnamon.

It seems like just yesterday when I flew onto the big yellow bus, and buzzed through my very first day of school. Mama Bee was a little sad, but she was also happy that I was going to learn so many new things, and make lots of new bee friends, too.

To keep the learning going, she and Papa Bee brought me to the library often, where I discovered how SWEET books were! And just look at me now – all grown up, with a PhBEE degree!

Come see what’s cooking at storytime this week! Did you know that the kitchen is one of the best places to build literacy (except for the library, of course!)? Choose a simple recipe and draw the measurements (cups, teaspoons, etc.) on a colorful posterboard. You can write simple instructions to read along as you create something delicious for you and your child.

Following a recipe appeals to all the senses, introduces math and science concepts, and provides a fun (but sometimes messy!) hands-on experience. Don’t forget your apron!

Of course, we will also literally “reach for the stars”, because I have learned from many busy days buzzing through the library that physical exercise stretches my “reading muscles” too! Those important stretches across the midsection send messages to my brain, helping prepare me for reading and writing. So stretch first, and then curl up with a good book!

Now that we’ve blasted off into summer reading, hop off the launch pad and onto the lily pad! Before things get too “hoppy” at your house, Ms. Laurie has a suggestion for those nifty storytime name stickers you’ve been collecting:

Select a spiral notebook with your child. After storytime, place the sticker on a page, and as you share stories about that theme this summer, write down the titles (and some interesting comments or drawings, too!) By the end of the summer, you’ll have a great collection of titles, and will have had some wonderful conversations with your child.

And the buzz is that those stickers make fun refrigerator magnets, too!

Dear Storytime Friends,

Although I visited several lovely gardens while I was away on my journey, I am so happy to be back in my home hive! Ms. Laurie and I missed all of you, and we are so grateful for all the helper bees who flew in to present storytime for you. They are the best!

Here is a picture of the “pollen demonstration” that Ms. Laurie and I did at Storytime this week. You can try this at home, by making a flower out of plastic bottle, and using a toilet paper roll to make a bee. I hope y’all had a rootin’, tootin’ time out on the trail with Ms. Laurie this week. Thanks to Ms. Angela, the Bee Cave Public Library has THE best collection of Texas picture books this side of Lake Travis! Some of my favorites are:

Saddle Up with Cowboy Bee

Howdy, y’all! The rodeo’s in town, so saddle up and mosey on down to storytime this week for some wild West cowboy songs and stories with Ms. Laurie.

It was fun to see all of you buzzing around the library helping us celebrate Dr. Seuss’ birthday last week. Did you know that Ms. Laurie took advantage of all the silliness to do some teaching? Yup, she’s sneaky that way – including some early literacy tricks like letter recognition skills with Dr. Seuss’ ABC rhyming song. You can try that at home too: sing the alphabet song and identify the letters that rhyme with their names, like B, C, D.

Then supervise your child’s play with magnetic, fabric, or even play-dough letters. Loving reading starts with having fun with sounds!
My favorite sound? BZZZZZZ!
